Initially CD4+ T cells respond to HIV infection, and both humoral and
CMI responses are detected. As the infection progresses, declines in
CD4+ cell functions declines, as do overall numbers of ciruclating CD4+
cells. Eventually the loss of CD4+ cells casues immune system collapse.
The viral load is essentially the amount of virus in a persons body.
This measure reflects both the production of new virus and the clearance
of preexisting virus, and can be used to monitor antiviral therapy.
