Advanced undergraduates in biology, marine science, or environmental sciences
programs are encouraged to apply for participation in an NSF funded study
entitled "The Role of Oyster Reefs in the Structure and Function of Tidal
Creeks". One REU position is available for the Summer of 1998. The study will
involve laboratory and/or field research in pristine tidal saltmarshes of the
North Inlet - Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, near Georgetown,
South Carolina. Research on topics including: benthic, microbial, and nekton
ecology are offered, and the chosen student researcher will interact closely
with a senior investigator team of eight scientists. Student research will
culminate with a laboratory seminar presentation and possibly attendance and
presentation at a regional scientific meeting later in the year. The student
will reside at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory from mid-May to late August
and will be supported by a competitive stipend. Interested students are
encouraged to submit: a one page statement of interest, faculty advisor's
