E.coli question

If a population of E.coli bacteria is cultured on a media high in glucose
then transferred to a media lacking glucose but high in lactose can someone
tell me what series of steps most take place in order for the cells to use
lactose efficiently as an energy source? (This is of course assuming all
other necessary nutrients are available. )
