Metabolic Pathway In E-coli

How can E.Coli (a mutant) use the metabolise glycollic acid (2-hydroxyethanoic
acid)when it lacks the enzyme citrate synthase (hence of working TCA cycle),
also the medium contained glutamate.
Clue the paper was published in 1961 (betcha no-one can even find the paper)
