Yes, There are reports of use of substitutes of agar- some which have
been reported to have properties quivalent to agar. E.g are like use of
"Isapgol" which is commonly availabe in the market. There was a report
last year in the journal, Plant Cell Reports, from a lab at Univ of Delhi
about use of this particule product as a "cheap substitute in place of
agar in plant tissue culture". Similarly there are reports of use of Tapioca
gel etc. I have not personally used these substitutes, just happy sticking
to Phytagel from Sigma.
