One can check out the refrence

S. B. Babbar, N. Jain:
`Isubgol' as an alternative gelling agent in plant tissue culture media
Plant Cell Reports 17 (1998) 4, 318-322.

for a cheap alternative for agar. The results are to say the least very
impressive indeed. (the paper says that). I am not sure if it has been
used for bacteriological purposes.....

p.s : Ashwin, I am not able to dig out the other ref from ICRISAT. I guess I
have lost it somewhere. Will give it another shot to find it.
