I would guess that a decent research mic with the possibility of phase 
contrast and UV fluorescence would go a long way, If it is possible to 
get cross polars as an accessory that would be great for some of your 
ingrediants.

You will have lots of people trying to sell you laser this and laser 
that - forget it for the present, BUT, get someone who knows how to set 
the microscope up and keep it clean and aligned - not many graduates can 
do that any more !
