The cells lining the interior of the stomach produce and secrete a
protective mucous layer as well as the stomach acid. This layer
prevents contact between the cell and the acid. Certain afflictions
are usually the result of acid actually attacking a cell. Any one of
several reasons can allow this to happen, causing an ulcer.
