A LEADER IN HOMELAND DEFENSE
The involvement of the UMDNJ-SPH in the conference is significant because it played such a strong role in dealing with last year's acts of terrorism, including the World Trade Center and the anthrax attacks. School staff trained many Port Authority personnel and rendered technical assistance immediately after the disaster. Other assistance was provided to the main Trenton Post Office. In addition, more than 25 SPH faculty members with a wide range of expertise have been assembled to investigate and respond to bioterror events. The New Jersey Medical School Center for Biodefense is also a leader in training responders. The UMDNJ Biosafety Level Three Facility has several biodefense-related projects underway, including a collaborative effort with the Public Health Research Institute to test hand held assays.
