We buy N-acetyl-L-cysteine for acid fast bacteria culture concentration
in a commercial system. The NALC is inside of a vial that floats in the
3% NaOH digesting solution. We break the vial by squeezing the plastic
bottle in just the right place, and the NALC becomes suspended inside
the buffer, which is good for 24 hours once the vial is broken.

I would guess this is proprietary with the company. It's nice for us,
because it enables us to have the digestant made up only when we need
it, and not make vats of it ahead of time and have to autoclave it, etc.
as it's a pain to make. For the life of me I can't remember who makes
it, but I'm thinking Bio Merieux, but maybe not.

So, it IS possible.
