                        Allan Wilson Memorial Conference

The Royal Society of New Zealand

                                       and
The Systematics Association of New Zealand,
                                   (SYSTANZ)

announce a conference in memory of Allan Wilson on

                                  Ancient DNA,
                               Human Origins, and
                             Molecular Systematics

                                 to be held in

                            Wellington, NEW ZEALAND

                           August 17th and 18th, 1992

Allan Wilson, Professor of Biochemistry at University of
California Berkeley, was one of New Zealand's most distinguished
scientists. It is fitting that the first of a series of Australian
and New Zealand meetings on molecular systematics be held to
celebrate his unique contribution to science. By combining his
biological and biochemical backgrounds he was able to help lead the
way to a new field of molecular evolution and systematics.

Scientific sessions will be held during the day on the Monday and
Tuesday. On the evening of Monday 17th a dinner will be held at
Parliament Buildings, following which Professors Rebecca Cann
(Hawaii) and Svante Paabo (Munich) will give their overviews of the
                 scientific impact of Allan's work.

The molecular systematics part of the conference will concentrate
somewhat on the South Pacific region, including Australia and New
Zealand, but contributions are very welcome on any of the themes
of the conference. In the previous week there is an International
Molecular Biology meeting in the resort town of Queenstown in the
                          South Island of New Zealand.
