A good place to start would be Russell Doolittle's "Of URFs and ORFs"
or Gunnar von Heinje's "Sequence Analysis: Treasure Trove or Trivial
Pursuit?". Also, the Methods in Enzymology volume on Sequence Analysis
(183?) contains a number of good articles as well as references for
further reading.
