Bacteriophage T4 DNA polymerase mutations that affect spontaneous mutation
rates have been extensively studied by Linda Reha-Krantz and her colaborators.
Mutations deficient in 3'-5' exonuclease activity dramatically increase
spontaneous mutation and the results are in PNAS 88:2417 (1991). I heard her
recent study on antimutator mutants of T4 DNA polymerase. People who are
interested in this issue may have to contact Linda for detail.
