A suggestion: since you are near UCLA, I suggest that you speak with one of the
biologists there.  If I recall correctly two excellent evolutionary biologist
types that you could start with are: Schopf and J. Diamond.  An excellent
microbiologist who works on Archea is R. Gunsales.  All these people should be
able to give you a start.
