I think most simple dominant phenotypes are probably due to the
resessive alelle being a null, that is no product or a non-functional
product. If a protien is made but does not contain the DNA binding
domain then it can not function if it needs to bind DNA. Another
possibility is if a mutant protien which can function but functions
improperly is produced, however the wild type protein can out compete it
for DNA binding sites then the mutant protein does not get a chance to
produce a mutant phenotype. I don't know if this is very clear or not,
I'll try and clear it up in a later post.
