New Position in Evolutionary Theory

The Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University seeks
an outstanding individual at the Assistant Professor levetl for an
anticipated tenure-track faculty position in the area of QUANTITATIVE
EVOLUTIONARY THEORY AND ANALYSIS. Preference will be given to candidates
who conduct research in one or more of the following areas: Molecular
evolution theory and analysis; Systematics theory and analysis; or
  Computational evolutionary biology.
It is likely that the successful applicant will use and develop computer-
based algorithms in one or more of these research areas (e.g., use of
computer-based models to study genome evolution; development of state-
of-the-art methods for biological sequence analysis; application of
high-performance computing to phylogenetic analysis). LSU has
outstanding computer facilities, including advanced parallel computing
laboratories. The applicant may work with any group of organisms, but is
expected to have the ability and interest to interact with the more than
35 experimentally oriented scientists in LSU's interdepartmental systematics
and evolutionary biology group, who study a diverse array of organisms,
 from microbes to mammals.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized
research program in an area of quantitative evolutionary theory and analysis,
direct graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses
(research faculty typically teach one course per semester) in the newly
reorganized Department of Biological Sciences. The position requires a
Ph.D. in biology or a related field.

Review of applications will begin on 15 November 1996, and the position will
begin in August, 1997. A complete application consists of a C. V., selected
reprints, a brief statement of research goals and teaching interests and
experience, and three letters of reference sent directly to Dr. Mark S.
