			- Plant Molecular Systematics -
		   Biological Sciences Laboratory Technician

	The Laboratory of Molecular Systematics (LMS) of the National
Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Institution, seeks a highly
motivated individual to perform research in plant molecular systematics.
The position is initially for a one-year appointment under the supervision
of Dr. Elizabeth A. Zimmer, and involves a collaborative project (with Drs.
Warren Wagner and Chrissen Gemmill) to investigate the evolution of South
Pacific Pittosporum.

The position may include the following responsibilities:

Isolation of plant nucleic acids, manipulation of DNA including automated
amplification and sequencing, production and screening of microsatellite
libraries with radioactive probes, development of flanking DNA primers for
population sample screening, analysis of sequence and microsatellite data
using computer-assisted algorithms, and performance of many basic
laboratory procedures accurately and efficiently such as preparation of
solutions and buffers, sterilization of glassware and media, maintenance of
bacterial strains and nucleic acid stocks.

The position requires a bachelors or masters degree, and experience in
plant molecular  biology . Starting salary range $21,421 - 26,532.  For
