Doug Brubacher in California queried the newsgroup on a possible i.d. for a 
russula with an odor of almonds . . . or, of amareto.

The attachment describes four russula species that fall within the 
category.  The text is from the excellent key developed by Ray Fatto of 
New Jersey and Geoffrey Kibby of England.  Their sources are the 
literature, including Romagnesi's Russula monograph.

I selected these records from a database I have been working on, with the
statement "{ind russula} almond {or} marzipan."  Actually the descriptions
may not apply, depending on other characteristics.  Especially since the
Fatto and Kibby key tends to cover eastern North America.  But what do
you say, Doug? 

If Doug's specimen represents a species other than any of these four, I 
would be interested in the details.
