I'd check the owner's garden shed too.  There are some pretty fierce
toxins in the Lilly Miller family, not to speak of the deadly Black
Flag.  Many lawn chemicals are not approved for food crops for a 
reason.

There are lots of commercial fungicides on the market.  I would think
a shot of lime-sulfur or Bordeaux solution would be a good place to
start.
