In most cases mushroom picking is allowed on the National Forests 
(which is most of Northern California) although a free permit is 
usually required.  Contact the Ranger station nearest the location 
you would like to pick to get the details.  They may even be able 
to tell you what is in season and where to look.  Good luck!
