The mycelium of the Garden Giant, S. rugoso-annulata forms only fruiting
bodies after considerable time. The substrate is colonised in three to
four weeks, but it takes eight weeks before primordia are formed. One
article by Poppe and Sedeyn in Mushroom Science XII 1989 suggests
that sterol, auxine or flavenol could stimulate primordia formation.
Another suggestion is that the depletion of nutrients leads to primordia
formation.
