OPPORTUNITIES IN PLANT PATHOLOGY & MYCOLOGICAL SCIENCES
The International Mycological Institute (IMI) based at Egham, Surrey, U.K.,
is currently expanding its research portfolio, with particular reference to
crop protection and fungal ecology and is seeking to recruit the
following staff:
Plant Pathologist
17 - 23K pounds sterling p.a.
The expansion of the current portfolio of crop protection activities is of
fundamental value to IMI. Research projects presently underway are focused
on the characterisation and variability of several pathogens of tropical
crops using a range of pathological, mycological and molecular techniques.
Outputs from this work are now being extended into field studies in
collaborative projects with institutions in developing countries with the
ultimate objective of improving the sustainability of crop protection
practices.
You will need a degree in the biological sciences preferably in botany, with
a post graduate qualification in plant pathology. Experience of research and
development in tropical crop pathology is essential. Experience of plant
disease diagnosis and pathogen identification techniques would be highly
advantageous.
Microbial Ecologist/Fungal Systematist
14 - 23K pounds sterling p.a. according to experience
Existing projects and contracts in this area include the use of fungi in
biodegradation and investigations into the significance of fungi in drinking
waters. The work is primarily directed towards the study of fungal
physiological processes and relationships between fungi and the
environment.
Community Based Microbial Ecologist/Fungal Systematist
14 - 23K pounds sterling p.a. according to experience
Projects currently underway are focused on the enumeration and assessment of
diversity of fungal groups in a range of habitats. The development of a
range of isolation and identification procedures in order to conduct these
is required.
Both the latter posts will also involve the development of skills in
systematic mycology by becoming expert in identification and
characterization, probably of loculoascomycetes or hyaline hyphomycetes and
require a Ph.D in microbiology, biochemistry, botany or ecology. Experience
in fungal ecology or fungal systematics is a prerequisite. Experience of
molecular biological techniques and a knowledge of more traditional
taxonomic methods would be highly advantageous.
For all positions, computer literacy, ability to produce concise and
coherent written work, experience in training and presenting papers and
adaptability, flexibility and the ability to interact with people from
differing backgrounds and cultures are desirable attributes.
