lime against insects

In a number of books on growing mushrooms in developing countries, lime 
is mentioned to be used against insects.Can anybody confirm this is quick 
lime (CaCO)? I can't possibly think of any reaction between insects and 
lime CaCO3.

I need this information for the update of the Manual on mushroom 
cultivation in developing countries, to be published in february 1996.
