This is a very broad question and the solutions may depend on many
factors including the purpose of fermentation, the scale, the strain
(not species!) and the availability of materials.  You can start with
the suggestions from the previous replies.  However, it may finally
become a case-by-case situation.  There may also be some software
available to help you design experiments.
