Brian, Dr. Junta Sugiyama, who I recently met in Japan, works on
Rhodotorula, other asco and basidio yeasts (Erythrobasidium vs.
Rhodotorula) and broader asco phylogeny using various methods of comparison
including microscopy, rDNA sequencing, and ubiquinones.  He may be able to
help you out himself or suggest more local US researchers who could do so.
