It has been my experience that morels can fruit anytime between February
and October, given certain conditions. I have already had an e-mail from
a friend in Tennessee who reports morels from mid-March under tulip
poplar and hickory. I have personally found morels from an inoculated bed
near View, WA as early as mid-March, and have collected morel (note: one
specimen) from February near Troutdale Airport in Oregon along the
Columbia River.
While it is certainly possible to find morels in May, conditions such as
temperature, rainfall or moisture availability, elevation, snow-level,
and soil temperature are more revealing.
Ultimately, morels, like gold, are where you find them.
