Sounds like Trichoderma to me - a very common contaminant.
Mercuric chloride is not a true sterilizing agent, just a surface
disinfestant. It would be better to sterilize your glassware in a
pressure cooker, assuming that you don't have an autoclave
available. Things aren't truely sterilized unless they are kept
at 15 pounds pressure for 15 minutes.
