Help with mold/fungus/mildew!!

Can anyone advise me of a "safe" application that would kill 
"mold/mildew/I don't know what" living in my den carpet in an area where 
my kids had repeatedly spilled a variety of liquids (but are now 
prohibited from drinking in there)?

The area is relatively small, but produces a pugent odor that permeates 
the entire den.  How can I safely kill the mold, preferably without 
having to cut the carpet?
