Separation of lichen into alga & fungus

Looking for reference sources or information on technique used to
separate lichens into alga and fungus components.

i am trying to evaluate the appropriateness of this topic for a high
school science project (for my nephew); complexity, skill level,
equipment requirements, etc.

My training is in chemical engineering, with little background in
biology.  And i live in a small community, some distance from a
university or industry that might be doing work related to this topic.
