Best book I've found for amateur mycological sleuthing is "Mushrooms
Demystified", by David Aurora. Published by Ten Speed Press, I think. Very
good text, fun to read, with some fascinating observations not found in
more "formal" texts. The standard field guides (Petersons, Audubon) are
okay, too--I use all of them. Mushrooms Demystified is the best place to
start, as far as collecting edibles. There are some good sites on the web
also. And of course, forums like this one are great for those of us who
like to hunt morels and chanterelles, as it's possible to track the
geographic progress of the fruiting delectables.
