[Mycology] Staining dried roots?

Dear all

Who has made good experiences with staining (and assessing colonization 
rate of) dried roots? 
Are fungal structures still easy to recognize (if you don't have much 
experience)?
Does any one know literature for citation where dried roots had been 
stained?
