Ion fluxes & bio/nano interface:was UNDERGRAD QUESTION

What would be the difference between powering a small motor or an
LED, and detecting current with a voltage/patch clamp? Isn't the
ion flux converted to an electrical signal by the exchange of ions on an
electrode? Could this energy be captured to power some _very_ small
device, or modify a control system for a larger device?
I seem to recall an article by a German group on controlling current
through a transistor by coupling a cell to the third electrode of an FET (I
can find the reference for anyone that is interested).
I am intrigued by this topic, but know little. Anyone care to help?
