In the article, "The Learning of Categories: Parallel Brain Systems for
Item Memory and Category Knowledge," Science, 262:1747-1749, 10 December
1993, Barbara Knowlton and Larry Squire present evidence that item memory
and category knowledge are stored separately. This appears to parallel
similar results for the olfactory system in Walter Freeman's work.
Olfactory feature data appear to be learned by the Olfactory Bulb, while
higher-level olfactory pattern data appear to be learned by the Pyriform
Complex. My simulation work suggests how higher-level patterns could be
learned even if feature learning were suppressed.
