Wetware? please explain!

  I was at a science lecture tonight at the paramount theatre in Seattle.
Anyways the speaker was Dr.Fred allan wolf. During his lecture he mentioned
something about how some people are experimenting with connecting computer
chips to the brain. He called it wetware. I was wondering what kinda of work is
this called?  Also is this kind of research widely done, and where at?

  BTW I read an article in OMNI magazine that had a futuristic look at
something like that, if that helps!!
