Q: Shrinking Heads

Hi Brain Specialists,

I've been asked a question about the special tradition that some nature
religion practice with burrying skulls in soil. After some time the
head including cranium shrinks. But how can the cranium shrink ?
One should think it is too stiff too shrink.

Does anybody have further information on this ?
