I don't know the study, but there is a good article on this subject in a
recent Scientific American :

SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN June 1994 Volume 270 Number 6 Pages 50-57

The end of the article also cites the following :

THE AMYGDALA: NEUROBIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF EMOTION, MEMORY AND MENTAL
DYSFUNCTION. Edited by John P. Aggleton. Wiley-Liss, 1992.

BRAIN MECHANISMS OF EMOTION AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING. J. E. LeDoux in
Current Opinion in Neurobiology. Vol. 2, No. 2, pages 191-197; April 1992.

THE ROLE OF THE AMYGDALA IN FEAR AND ANXIETY. M. Davis in Annual Review of
Neuroscience, Vol. 15, pages 353-375; 1992.
