Cortical System and Columnar Structure

Recently many persons thinks that columnar structure is very 
important in cortical information processing...

And from many experimental data it is more clear that
the columnar structure is the most important units.....

I want to know more about
the columnar structure and their experimental data....
such as size of column(engaged number of neurons) 
and coupling strength between neurons.... and so on
