Dear Kristin
It's different between regions of brain. The lower region of brain, e.g. brain-
stem, develops early and higher region, e.g. cerebral cortex, develops slowly.
So it is recommended neurons of brainstem be cultured aboud embryonic day
14-15, and those of cortex about 18-20 day. It is not desirable to culture
neurons from neonates because viability drops rapidly in in vitro after birth.
Only if you want to culture astrocytes, you can get it from neonates.
Best regards,
Seong-Hun.
