Have you considered Kluver Barrera KV or the Auletta, both of which use
the metachromatic properties of cresyl violet? Although the KV technique
requires attention to detail and is time consuming, it gives excellent
results. However, I've obtained good results with a relatively fast and
easy staining technique described by Donovick, P. J. (A metachromatic
stain for neural tissue., Stain Technology, 49: 49-51, 1974) using a
combination of formalin and thionin. The cell bodies appear dark purple
and the fibers are reddish pink.
