medial forebrain bundle

I wonder if the expert neuroscientists who read this newsgroup might answer the following:
To what extent would severing the medial forebrain bundle at a position proximate to the
base of the prefrontal cortices produce a similar set of symptoms as that seen in damage
to the ventromedial and/or dorsolateral prefrontal cortices themselves?
Are there animal experiments that have severed this nerve pathway?
The question arises after reading Damasio's description of the two cases in *Descartes'
Error*, Phineas Gage, in which the accidental damage seemingly must have involved the
bundle, and Elliot, who underwent an operation and presumably, the surgery might have
avoided destruction of the bundle.
