There a various people in the neurofeedback (EEG biofeedback) field
doing analagous work with photic stimulation, although today they
commonly refer to it as 'disentrainment' or some other phrase. Most
appear to believe that the useful function is NOT to lead the brain
into some ideal or better state, but to get it out of a rut by
presenting in near real time a frequency that varies slightly from the
brain's predominant frequency at some electrode site(s).

Len Ochs, Ph.D. describes some of the details of what the research has
been finding at his web page,

I refrain from speaking about the conditions that have been reversed
or ameliorated by such techniques because they are just clinical
reports. But if things like getting suddenly elevated TCell counts,
improvements with hopeless addicted populations, and a variety of
other documentable manifestations are of interest, one might want to
check into this stuff further.
