To the many neuro/psycho/internet types who have been sending famous
quotes, stories, and anecdotes:
Thanks for your numerous funny contributions, please keep them coming.
By now, I think I owe you one.
Art Arnold is a very well known individual in the world of
psychoneuroendocrinology (for those of us with enough breath to say the
field name). During his lectures on sexual dimorphisms between males and
females, he often describes how individuals have been quick to accept the
obvious physical differences in our external genitalia, yet hesitant to
believe in physical differentiation in the CNS. In Arnold's terms, the
penis is a result of a "default" female body being altered by gonadal
steroids. There is strong evidence that the same steroid hormones
(testosterone aromatized in the brain to estradiol) are responsible for
changing the brain. As he says at the end of some of his lectures, "
Perhaps the brain is also a penis."
