Q: role of layer 1 connections in the control of pyramidal cell firing

A basic principle of cortical connectivity is that feedback
connections from a given cortical area to one of its cortical inputs
terminate in layer 1. Can anyone point out some recent studies, or
provide a summary of recent work, that have examined how these
connections contribute to the response properties of pyramidal neurons
in layers 5 and 6?

Thanks in advance for any information.
