Different views of the brain?

Throughout the ages, the brain has been likened to many different machines as
people have tried to understand its functioning. Some examples:

    - a radiator to cool the blood
    - a switchboard
    - a computer
    - a hologram

Can anyone point me to more information about these and any other similar
"comparisons" that people throughout history have made to the brain?
