Hmmmm...  Your mention of anthropology brings to mind the work of Terrence
Deacon, author of _The Symbolic Species_ (1997).  Deacon is an
anthropologist and a neurobiologist.  I am not familiar with his work, but
maybe it might be worth looking into.
