biological control

Hi Marguerite:
The method you
mentioned is not science
fiction, it is a very old
idea to control pests and
parasites. The method is
called biological control.
There are three major
problems with this
approach: 1) How to
establish a large
population of the
controlling organism to
assure pest control. 2)
When the pest is
eradicated what will
happen with the
controlling organism?
there were cases in the
history of biological
control in which the
controlling organism
chose to attack
something new -not
considered a pest by us.
3) Even when specificity
to the pest is
experimentally proven
there are no guarantees
against genetic
recombination in the
controlling organism
which can transform a
harmless organism to
harmful and hazardous
pest. Then, we will have
to look for a new
biological control against
the old one. And since we
worked hard to establish
a large population in the
beginning, now we have
a large problem to solve.
