postnatal cort and weight

I was wondering about postnatal corticosterone levels
and weight gain in rat pups. I have seen in the literature
that abnormally high levels of cort will cause a
decrease in weight gain, and several explanations have
been offered. However, I have not seen anyone really
try to control for this to assess what is going on. For
example, saying that cort is catabolic.
Even more confusing to me, however, is that under conditions
of abnormally low levels of cort, pups also seem to gain
less weight. What's going on here?
