need help with diffuse cerebral dysfunction, New York area

The mother of a close friend of mine, who is 82, recently suffered a severe
breakdown. At first doctors thought it was a stroke, but that has been ruled
out by MRI and the diagnosis is now "diffuse cerebral dysfunction."

The family has to find a hospital or other facility that will give her the
best care. They are in the New York area but will place her elsewhere if it
would be best for her.

I understand this ailment is classified either as psychiatric or
neurological.

Does anyone have experience with this condition and have a doctor/facility
to recommend? This woman, always reliable and highly intelligent, is now
unable to speak or stand, and the family is distraught.

I would appreciate any knowledgeable, E-MAILED advice ASAP.

Thank you very much.
