I don't think it's a surgical procedure.
In textbook of neurology, it's a mainly diagnostic procedure for many
disease from infectious disease to Alzheimer's disease. Some exceptions are
idiopathic intracranial hypertension and nomotensive hydrocephalus or so.
As I commented, in Tbc arachnoiditis the sticky protein itself causes
hyporeflexic paraparesis, but the family of the patients accused doctors for
lumbar puncture to cause it, also the court don't know about that medical
practice. That's the hard time for the accused doctor, you know.
The only thing that should be paid attention is gentle and aseptic
