Duh.  The reason the Bolshevik's succeeded in their revolution was
that Russia had been essentially bankrupted by WW I, after being
nearly bankrupted by the Russo-Japanese War.

Even at the best of times, all those beautiful buildings were owned by
no more than a couple percent of the population, while the rest of
Russia was mired in medieval poverty.

No.  You have it backwards.  They were UP to $10 per month (they are
now a good deal higher, BTW).
